Post No. 52: And Now Some Pablo Neruda

Some eight or so years ago, a childhood friend of mine introduced me to Pablo Neruda. He emphasized that Neruda was special. Not having read any of his work prior to that introduction, or since, I did not fully appreciate what he had shared with me.

Just a few minutes ago, I ran across the blog of another blogger, Vincent Robleto. He recently posted one of Neruda's works, You're the Result of Yourself.

Upon reading it, I realized that it embodies many of the principles central to the concepts discussed in this blog, and promoted by the Institute for Applied Common Sense.

Enjoy.

You're the Result of Yourself
by Pablo Neruda

Don't blame anyone, never complain of anyone or anything.

Because basically you have made of your life what you wanted.

  1. Quite frankly Vincent, your contribution of Neruda's work may be the most frequently visited piece on this blog to date. It's pretty powerful. We've spent months and thousands of words to express a concept which he managed to express in so few. Thanks.

  2. Common sense...there seems to be a shortage. Everybody wants to blame everyone else for things in their own lives. So true and yet equally as sad.

  4. I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Neruda. We are the results of our environments. Perhaps we are born with free will, but we are shaped by those around us from an early age, before we are capable of utilizing that free will. So technically everyone (and everything) you've ever interacted with can be blamed for one's current place in life.

With that said though, someone who thinks this way would lead a very querulous life.

  5. Thanks much Aaron for posting a comment on my blog with respect to the Pablo Neruda poem, "You're the Result of Yourself." You essentially suggested that we are primarily products of our environment. This delves into the classic "nature" vs. "nuture" debate. While I agree that environment is clearly a factor, more and more research, particularly using cutting edge brain scan technology and now that we have mapped the human genome sequence, strongly suggests that nature may be an even stronger factor. Being aware of both factors should assist us in making better life choices. Thanks for participating in the discussion.

  7. Thanks much Brian for posting a comment on our blog, in connection with the Pablo Neruda poem focusing on personal responsibility. I agree with you also that there is far too much blame assignment in our society. It has really been highlighted during the presidential election campaign, to the point of ridiculousness. I hope to learn some things from your blog on writing.
