I read about this on a BBC website earlier today. I don't think he's changed his mind so much as added another perspective to it. There was much speculation in the comments on the article that it was about pumping up interest in his book (where the remarks originated). Could be.
Something else came to me... Although I am atheist and, therefore, this isn't important to me, I thought that perhaps what Hawkings said could be construed into "God made the rules that the universe had to obey. Once made, there is no more need for His direct involvement."
I have long felt that most people simply lie about their relationship with and belief in God.
As Bill Maher claims, it is the biggest con job ever put over on people. To make it worse, so many billions go along with it to simply avoid conflict with one another!
That so few people anywhere on the web who had ANYTHING to say about Hawking's thoughts suggests that the so called believers are just full of it. Oh that's right, the true believers do not have to defend their beliefs.

Anonymous, I'm sorry you feel that way about people who believe in God. We're not perfect, by no means, and unfortunately, these days, the loudest ones seem to be the most judgmental. My relationship with God is the most important aspect of my life. My hubby is an atheist and I respect his decision to be so. His decision, not mine. But I do pray for his eternal destination, as per my beliefs.
And maybe it's not about defending our beliefs. As a Christian I believe we need to be more about what we're for than what we're against. And that's the basic command, love God AND love one another. Jesus first and foremost helped those in need, regardless of whether they believed in him or not. And he didn't come to condemn.
Mrs. Miller, if all of the religious people out there had your attitude and compassion, it would not bother me so much. But the way in which many hard core religious folks have behaved here recently, especially during the administration of President Obama, has really bothered me. they condemn almost everything, as if THEY are perfect. So many of them, especially in the Bible Belt, act like their belief in God gives them the corner on righteousness.
